AM730 : LOGISTICS BUSINESS IN HONG KONG WITH NEW DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

ORIENTAL DAILY : HONG KONG LOGISTICS INDUSTRY GETTING INTO THE WORLD'S ARENA

With the drastic contraction of the world economy last year, the export markets experienced the hardest hit. Many international airlines had no alternatives but to ground their freighters in desert to reduce their high operating cost. Most major shipping liners "MOL" had cut their capacities substantially and merged their operations by sharing space, vessels and capacities with each other.

Whereas, most 3rd party logistics' providers and freight forwarders, they sorted to down-sizing the operations in terms of number of head counts and office/warehouse space. To meet the challenge, many freight forwarders had to develop new markets in developing economies such as Indian Sub-continent, South America, the Middle-East and Africa. But tackling these emerging markets is no lack of risks. The highly competitive environment and the risk in credit control remains a big challenge.

A-Sonic Logistics has been tapping into the market in the People Republic of China "PRC", since 2003 through M&A of a Chinese 3PL and also by setting up its own branch offices through CEPA. The edge of logistics business operators in Hong Kong is the connectivity through a comprehensive overseas networks and the experience in international logistics business.

In addition, the free port status of Hong Kong facilitates cargo movements with its simple and efficient customs procedures. For Hong Kong to remain as an important logistics hub, the government should render greater assistance to the industry by re-visiting the current transshipment regulations and requirements, in particular those on high tech commodities so that costs can be lowered to increase our competitiveness.
